What’s the Difference between 4G and 5G?

As we all know, 1G has been eliminated by The Times. 2G May only exist in the old machine. 3G is only used by a small number of people. 4G network has just developed to a relatively common situation. At this point, 5G networks are just around the corner. So what’s the difference between 4G and 5G? Is 5G really better than 4G?

Part I. Difference between 4G and 5G

1. Speed

The most intuitive feature of 5G networks is super-high speed. For example, if 4G allows users to communicate as neighbors, 5G allows users to communicate face to face. The most obvious difference is that on 4G it may take several minutes to download a large file, while on 5G it takes only a second or two.

That’s because 5G communications have broken through one of the bottlenecks of infinite transmission, speeding up the transmission of information through the air by using high-frequency radio waves. Meanwhile, in the 5G era, when two users in the same base station communicate with each other, their communication data will be directly transferred from one mobile phone to another instead of being forwarded by the base station. This not only greatly saves air resources, but also speeds up the transmission of information.

2. Base station

Nowadays, communication basically depends on electromagnetic waves. To improve the propagation rate of electromagnetic waves, we must increase the frequency of electromagnetic waves. But in practical application, the higher the frequency, the greater the loss in the way of propagation. That is to say, the higher the requirement of the signal transmitting base station is, the higher the requirement of the technology is.

4G networks use large base stations, which are expensive to build and take up a lot of space. If such a base station is used, 5G will have a lot more base stations than 4G to cover the same area, and it will cost a lot of money to build them. Therefore, to solve the financial problem, 5G is expected to use micro base stations, which cover a small area, are small in size, and are much cheaper.

Since the requirements for base stations in the 4G era are not high, there is no need to use micro base stations. However, in the 5G era, due to the high-frequency electromagnetic wave in the propagation of great loss, the micro base station technology gradually developed. So what are the benefits of micro base stations?

The micro base station can greatly reduce the cost of 5G coverage. Compared with a large base station, the construction cost of a small base station is lower, and it can be built into a mobile one that can be transferred when needed, which is more suitable for the future information world. Of course, the technical requirements of the micro base station are also much higher.

In 4G networks, each base station basically uses up to eight wires. And because 5G uses high-frequency radio waves, it will require much smaller wires.

In addition, to improve signal strength, 5G base stations use MIMO technology to take advantage of the characteristics of small antennas, in which hundreds of antennas are arranged in an array. At the same time, high signal intensity can be obtained by using the certain technical treatments and reasonable arrangements of these antennas.

Similarly, the size of the antenna in a user’s phone will be greatly reduced. Although this contributes to reducing space occupancy and improving portability, it also sets a higher standard for manufacturers’ production technology.

Part II. Related Product: 4G and 5G CPE

With the development and public demand of 4G and 5G network, VSOL also develops a series of customer premise equipment of 4G and 5G, which allows the mobile phone to connect the 4G and 5G network by inserting the SIM card to the CPE. 4G indoor CPE XMC1841 adopts 2 external WiFi antennas and 2 external LTE antennas, making the wireless signal stronger. It can reaches 300Mbps. 5G indoor CPE XTC5151 is a representative one, which adopts WiFi 6, reaching a maximum speed of 1800Mbps. It can be applied in remote meeting, live video, VR, etc.
