Introduction of HGU Router and a Comparison with SFU

With the application of PON(Passive Optical Network), it’s not out of ordinary to find ONU deployed in many families’ houses. According to different application scenarios, ONU can be divided into SFU, HGU, SBU, MDU, and MTU. HGU and SFU are the most heard in life. But seldom do people know that actually they belong to ONU and their distinction. Now in this article, let’s explore what an HGU router is and its difference from SFU.

1. What is HGU Router?

ONU can be divided into SFU (Single Family Unit), HGU(Home Gateway Unit) and SBU (Single Business Unit). Thus, HGU is a kind of ONU.

HGU belongs to the home gateway devices, which facilitate family networking. It supports routing and NAT, which belong to Layer 3 devices. It’s able to achieve broadband dial-up and the computer or mobile terminal devices connecting to the network without dial-up. HGU fits for large-scale operation and management. Generally, the router itself brings WiFi and USB.

2. What’s the Difference between HGU and SFU?

From the above content, we can know that SFU also belongs to ONU. But SFU is a bridge unit and is mainly used by single-family. It only supports broadband access terminals. There are one or four Ethernet interfaces, providing Ethernet/IP service, VoIP and CATV service. It’s mainly applied in FTTH.

In terms of establishment, SFU can’t carry out coupling across different manufacturers. The ONU only can connect to OLT of the same manufacturers. However, HGU can achieve coupling without incompatibility.

HGU, the home gateway ONU, supports Layer 3 routing, which can network easily and supports communication among multiple users. As for SFU, it is equal to Layer 2 Switch and only supports every single user to access the Internet.

3. Introduction of V-SOL HGU Router

V-SOL develops a series of HGU routers. Here let’s get to know 3 representative products. All HGU supports dual modes involving GPON and EPON.

● HG322G:1GE+1POTS HGU

The device supports dual modes both EPON and GPON. There are various interfaces to meet different service demands. There is an xPON port, a Gigabit LAN port, an FXS port for VoIP service, a Reset button and a power port. It can be applied in all kinds of scenarios such as school, family, and enterprise.

● HG325ACT: 4GE+1POTS+WiFi 5+USB 3.0+CATV HGU

The router provides multiple services. There are 4 GE ports, which provide a stable and high-speed connection for all Internet devices. The xPON port includes EPON PX20+ and GPON Class B+. The USB3.0 port is used for storage and printer. Moreover, the rate of WiFi can reach up to 1.167Gbps. The HGU supports mesh networking with one-click WiFi matching. Thus, you can use this HGU device with a V-SOL mesh router such as HG3610ACM to set up a WiFi mesh network in your house.

● HG325AX: 4GE+1POTS+1USB3.0+WiFi 6 HGU

It’s a new product estimated to be released in Q2, 2022. What makes it different from other V-SOL HGU devices is that it supports WiFi 6 including 802.11a/n/ac/ax 5GHz & 802.11g/b/n/ax 2.4GHz. WiFi encryption is also enabled. It also supports OFDMA, MU-MIMO, DynamicQoS, and 1024-QAM.

Conclusion

All in all, you should choose the best one according to your demand and application whether HGU or SFU. If you choose HGU, there are also plenty of kinds. You can comment below to let us know what product you are interested in or need!
